Why Healthy School Lunches are a Waste Of Money
Hello everyone! This article was very interesting and hit some key points on why and how school lunches are wasting money that the government can use in other areas that our country may need. Free school lunches may be beneficial to some but the majority of students starting in elementary schools all the way to high school waste more food than they actually consume. Leading into the fact that many students toss healthy foods such as fruits and veggies out instead of eating them because they would much rather eat better tasting food such as chips and candy; another reason is they may have no time to eat. This goes for most elementary schools, because most of the children don’t have much time to eat according to Christopher Wanjeck, and they focus on the more time they will get to play at recess. Considering if they had a longer time to eat they would most likely finish the meal that they received at lunch. High school is a bit different, due to the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act that was passed in 2010, food that is served to students must be more nutritional and because of this students either toss the healthy school lunch or they tend to wait until after school to eat their bag of chips and soda which causes a higher chance of gaining unhealthy weight and risking health problems. This nutritional act started because of kids eating unhealthy but that doesn’t stop them from consuming junk foods it just increases the amount of food they waste that is healthier for their daily diet.http://www.livescience.com/52408-healthy-school-lunch-food-waste.html
This seems like a very interesting article from your summary you give. Could it be though, that kids don't eat the healthy foods given at school because they aren't taught to eat healthy at home? Most kids and teens are only going to eat what they are already accustom to. Maybe if it was more cheaper to eat healthy, more families would, which can teach there kids to choice good food instead of just tasty snacks.

This article makes a lot of sense, in the fact that we see many of our fellow classmates wasting their food items. Most kids buy chips and other snacks from people who sell them, instead of school lunch. I believe they don't eat healthy because they have access to unhealthy snacks that may taste better then the healthier option. We need to teach kids the dangers of unhealthy snacks versus the positives of healthy snacks that the school provides. This blog created a lot of insight and introduced a new topic to me.
