Food Deserts

The topic I chose for my research paper was to detect if health issues and poor nutrition, which affect mostly minorities, were caused from food deserts. Food deserts are places where the area where a family with low income, does not live within a mile of a grocery store or any healthy nutrients. People of color have shown to be the ones to live in food deserts and also demonstrate having the most health issues. Black people demonstrate having the highest obesity rates and Latino's coming second. These people of color also have low incomes and live nowhere near any healthy grocery store. Instead, what can be found near their homes is fast food restaurants and small convenience stores which only sell junk foods. It is shown that white people who do have high income do not suffer from any type of health issues and do not lack any grocery stores in their area which provide healthy, affordable foods. What I hope to find is how we can change these food deserts, which affect minorities, and see why they are affected in the first place. I hope to find ways to change these demographics and also see how their health would change once there is a change in their environment. It is hard to find recent journals of food deserts, however. The resources I find are either too short, or out of date. I have found some interesting articles which could help me, but they are science journals I would need to buy ( I do not have money at the moment). I would need to keep digging or browsing through the internet in order to find information about local food deserts in L.A County as well. What websites could I go to that can give me dated papers, with out having to buy them? Not only that but also local papers about L.A county?
