Fast Food Industries and Low Income Neighborhoods

This article talks about how fast food industries and how they tend to target low income families. Low income families eat the most fast food in America, because they can't afford to buy healthier food. Fast food companies give them a full meal at a cheap price. However, these companies target black and hispanics children the most. Why? Because they know that often times their families are the ones struggling. A study was done that showed that fast food chains predominately in low income neighborhoods target children who will most likely suffer from obesity in the near future. They want these children to get into the habit of constantly eating fast food, and they do so by advertising things that kids will want. They use toys and cartoon characters to get children to eat their food. The problem is that these kids, especially black children, are at a high risk for obesity, diabetes, and other food related problems. These children aren't being exposed to healthy foods the same way children in richer neighborhoods are. It's not fair for children, who can't help what their parents make, to not have the same opportunity to eat healthier. It's almost like the food industry doesn't care about their health but instead they care about keeping money in their pockets that will later on put vegetables in their children's mouths.

  1. I agree with you on how industries target low income families. This post reminded me of one of the clips we watched in class! The one where a family of 4 was comparing healthy products and fast foods and how it nearly would be the same price as a burger compared to a head of lettuce.

  2. Seems like the article has it's facts straight about the reason behind children are trapped into this routine of eating fast food all the time. I don't believe it's right. Also, how are these industries , this government show any concern of the future generation by feeding things that are unhealthy. The only move I seen in play, is the one that's taking all of the money. Well said Breyonne.
