Childhood Obesity

One of the articles that I chose talks about the increase of childhood obesity in the past 30 years. Childhood obesity is something that should be taken seriously, the numbers are only getting higher and higher. One in five children in the United States has childhood obesity. A larger number of children that have childhood obesity are Hispanic and African American. As it is starting to affect a larger number of children, the children that already have it are now starting to get bigger. There are a great number of reasons why children are obese, for instance maybe their parents can't afford healthier foods, maybe the kid has poor body image, or maybe the kid have behavior or learning problems. The article list many more reasons on why kids may have childhood obesity. Having childhood obesity can lead to health complications later in life like Type 2 diabetes, asthma, or high cholesterol. Childhood obesity is a huge problem in the United States, we need to start fighting this problem. Some steps we can start to take in order to decrease childhood obesity numbers include having our children exercise more often, watching what are children eat, and force the government to lower the prices of fruits and vegetables. A big reason why children are obese is because families can't afford to buy fruits and vegetables, so instead they buy fast food for their children. We can change the prices of fruits and vegetables buy forcing the government lower the prices. If we take it one step at a time, I believe that we can defeat childhood obesity.
