Anonymous Posting is like Face Paint

I remember reading Lord of the Flies in my 9th grade English class, and one of the parts that was discussed in class was when the kids put on face paint, and started to act completely savage. I even pulled a quote from the part, "the mask was a thing of its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness." I believe that this quote on it's own is a very good example of how internet trolls work. They hide behind a screen like the kids hide behind their face paint. They don't have to face the consequences of their actions because no one knows who they are in the first place. They feel no shame, no remorse, nothing. It's similar to how people act in mobs. They act worse than they would if they were alone. It's an odd thing about humanity.

Humans are more confident in their actions when people don't know who they are. Of course, right? If you mess up, no one will know who you are and nothing will be pinned to you. I guess that's the appeal of anonymous posting. You can do whatever and you will face no harm. Anonymous posting is kind of like a super power when I think about it. It comes with great power and great responsibility. You can use it for good or for evil. Generally speaking, most people use it for good. Do you use your powers for good or for evil? (Probably good. Honestly I don't know anyone who's rude online).

  1. I guess we've grown up in a world where showing your true feelings and emotions is such a bad thing, that it makes people feel they need to suppress them. People feel like their only way to truly express themselves is when they are anonymous because they feel the relief of expressing themselves but are safe from the judgement of the world because their identity remains secret. Although it doesn't stop people from commenting and sharing their ideas and thoughts of your writing, art, etc. You may be a mystery but your work is free game for anyone to share their thoughts whether they be good or bad.

  2. I've been meaning to read Lord of the Flies. I've heard good things but also some bad.
I think you are correct though. We tend to act on things when we know we won't be recognized. We get a sense of liberation from our identities we always are recognized by
