-I am the first in my family to go to college. Should I be nervous?
I am somewhat nervous because I don't know what to do. I have to ask people outside of my family to help because all this is new to me. I am also excited because it means I finally get to be on my own. I don't really feel like I'm ready for it too, I've heard from past friends that college is hard. I am up for the challenge but I just don't want to let my family down if I don't end up doing good. I feel like all the pressure is on me since most of my family members keep telling me what I want to do with my life. I know what I want to do in my life, I've seen the struggles my family went through without an education and I don't want that. I hope that I can succeed and be a role model to my brother, younger cousins, and future kids in the family. I think I should relax and not overthink it.
-Is it less expensive if I go to community college and transfer?
I can only get into a community college since I messed up in high school. I've been hearing that going to a community college and then transferring to a university is cheaper. I also hear that it is basically the same education that they are teaching you. I have a friend that told me that they actually pay more attention to you in community college than in a university because it is a smaller class in community college. Another friend of mine said that he has family members that went to community colleges and that it is cheaper. Even if I had the grades to go to a cal state or any university I would still go to a community college because of all the advice I hear from other people.
I am also the first in my family to attend college. I am very nervous about this mainly because I don't know what to expect about any of it. It's hard not to think about letting my own family down. I want to be successful and help them out when it's all said and done, and make their lives easier. I wish nothing but the best of luck to you and great success upon you as well
ReplyDeleteIf I was the first person in my family going to college I would also be nervous. I think you have to go into college with a positive mindset. Believe in yourself. It is less expensive if you go to a community college then transfer to a university. Going to a community college is one of my options, but I'm not quite sure if I want to do this.
ReplyDeleteI'm also the first person in my family to go to college and I'm pretty nervous as well. You should talk to some of your friends that are in college and ask them questions. Get help from them. But other than that, you should be excited. And yes, it is less expensive to go to a community college and then transfer. It also gives you a fresh start. You can start a new chapter in your education and do better.
ReplyDeleteIt's comforting to know that we are all firsts in our family, and thus feel the added pressure to succeed because we're the ones who are supposed to "break the ass barrier." I understand what you mean by witnessing family struggles and trying to set a precedent for the rest of your following family. However I think you should also remember that at the end of the day, whatever progress you have made should make you proud because no matter what way you view it, you've made a difference to your family and it's history.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jazzminne in that whatever you are setting out to do , you are already doing more than what your family has. I think it is important to look at the pressure as a positive factor for you to finish high school and move on into college. I think regardless of what you decide to do even if that includes not finishing college, you will always have that pride in knowing that you at least tried. You have already made it further than everyone else and that is an accomplishment in itself.
ReplyDeleteI do believe being the first to attend college can make you extremely nervous. College is different from what we originally are used to and that is sort of frightening knowing we will be starting all over again. Although college will be difficult, it is not impossible and as long as you apply yourself and are determined to do whatever it is you want to do, you should be fine. Most of all I think the best way to get through college is to picture what your life will be like once you are making more money and have a good life, and STAY POSITIVE!!!
