In the book The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin the main protagonist, Genly Ai, is visiting a planet where he has a hard time blending in and getting used to the inhabitants. Genly Ai encounters a species that is different from him, while Genly comes from a planet that is much like earth, where the people who inhabit it have genders, this new planet, Gethen, has people who have no genders unless they are in the state of "Kemmer" which is how they reproduce. Genly has a hard time wrapping his head around this idea and finds it difficult to fit in while on this planet. It is important for him to adjust because his mission is to get the planet to join a group called Ekuman which is like the United Nations but for outer space. Since Genly struggles to see the Gethenians as they see themselves he is often referred to as a lonely outsider. Gently Ai's attitude reveals that the world he comes from places a large emphasis on gender roles and social statuses. For example throughout the book Genly makes many sexist comments that are most likely very common on his planet but don’t really make sense to the Gethenians because of their lack of permanent genders. On Gethen all the people are treated as equals there is no weaker half of the population for example Ursula K. Le Guin emphasises this when she writes, "Consider: there is no division of humanity into strong and weak halves, protective/protected, dominant/submissive, owner/chattel, active/passive. In fact the whole tendency to a dualism that pervades human thinking maybe found to be lessened, or changed, on Winter.” (Ch.7, pg 94) This shows that perhaps the lack of genders plays a role in the way Gethenians can easily see each other as equals. Since Genly was raised on a planet where there are strong gender roles he has a difficult time accepting the way the Gethenians live.

Due to Genly's sexist comments throughout the novel, I am convinced that he arrives to Gethen from a patriarchal society. Because patriarchal societies see men as better leaders because they are traditionally thought to be less fragile and more forward than women, Genly struggles to understand or accept their society even more because he cannot categorize the inhabitants of Gethen into these two categories (due to their genderless anatomy, as you have stated). This may be why he displays more effort and comfort when speaking of business terms to someone with more male traits than female traits, and why he was seemingly annoyed with Estraven in the beginning of the novel. In the end, it seems Genly will only be able to move forward with his mission once he ceases the desire to categorize everyone into genders.
ReplyDeleteIt is obvious that Genly Ai doesn't fit in and is the outsider everyone sees him as. Coming from a different world on a mission isn't as easy as you think. Since Genly is the outsider here, it's hard for the Gethenians to trust him or for him to trust them. In the beginning of the story we saw Estraven as a traitor who betrayed Ai however throughout the story we noticed Estraven is one of the few who believes in Ai and is really just trying to help him. It turns out Estraven was just really trying to help him out but all his plans turned out to be a failure. We have noticed the world Genly Ai has entered is a far different world then his. Everything is far different from the world Genly comes from like being genderless and either having peace or war but not both. It won’t be easy for Genly to achieve his mission but its not impossible.
ReplyDeleteYou made a very good point when saying that Genly Ai struggles to fit-in in this genderless world of the Genthenians. Having the Gethenians join Ekuman and make peace will be his biggest challenge but will eventually be done. Since he does not fit in that genderless society, the people of Gethinain do not know what to think of Genly Ai because he is a man and they do not have a gender until they reach kemer and become male or female. This ties into Estraven because Ai's qualities as a person played on how he treated him as another person. He thought really negatively of Estraven but he wanted all good for him from what we had read so far.
