Wave 3- Vivian Shepherd

The Left Hand of Darkness is told through myths folktales and stories. Beginning to end it's very confusing. We learn how the Planet Winter works. We learn that suicide is frowned upon in Gethen because it shows the individual is weak. We also see that the people of Gethen aren't very welcoming to new comers such as Genley. Many of the things that happen in Gethen ties to their over all shifgrethor. Overall, it's very hard to read so you can't just read it one time to understand. They pass on the past through these stories myths and folktales to give to the next generation. All together though I understand bits and pieces of the stories it's very confusing at least to me. We learn about kemmering which is how they create new life which is weird to understand but that's what they do. Overall, I don't know how to feel about the book.

  1. This book was a very difficult one indeed. But it was unique I agree. Everything in the book showed a different way of living for a different type of species. There were things in this book that ties into what we deal with I'm are actual world. Which was very interesting to analyze. I agree all The way.

  2. I agree with the both of you guys this book in quit interesting and difficult to understand. Like Vivian said to fully understand this book you have to read it multiple times . This book is told through 3 main perspectives ; Genly's, Estraven and little folk tales. You gain knowledge from this book and different perspective on things such as how people look at gender. Even though this book is very time consuming, I highly recommend it to fellow students .

  3. I agree that the book is very confusing but once you go over it again and discuss it in class it is very easy and cool to see all the connections throughout the story. It is interesting to see how others perceive the book and how those opinions influence yours. I have really benefited from the class discussions and blog posts because it opens my eyes to other ways to look at the story.

  4. I agree with the book being really confusing because I barely know whats happening most of the time and the book is not one of my faves and iI would not recommend.I like some parts of the book on how the gethen communities work and how weird their tradition to us but not to them. It shows that people have different and they may have different culture.
